How to add an emoji to your Discord server
Making the file is the easy half. This is the part people get stuck on, so here it is in full — including the permission you need and the name rules that reject most first uploads.
- Open your server, click the server name, then Server Settings → Emoji.
- Click Upload Emoji and pick your PNG or GIF. It must be 128×128 and under 256 KiB — anything we export already is.
- Give it a name of 2 to 32 characters using only letters, numbers and underscores. Spaces and dashes are rejected, which is the most common reason an upload fails.
- Press Enter. The emoji is live for everyone on the server, and you type it as :name:.
On mobile: long-press the server icon, tap Settings, then Emoji, then Upload Emoji. The rules are identical; only the menu path differs.
You need the Manage Expressions permission, which older Discord clients still label Manage Emojis. A free server holds 50 static and 50 animated emoji; Boost Level 1 raises that to 100, Level 2 to 200 and Level 3 to 250.

What size do Discord emojis need to be?+
Discord emojis must be 128×128 pixels. PNG format is recommended for static emojis; GIF is supported for animated emojis. Maximum file size is 256KB. EmojiCreator.ai automatically resizes and optimizes your emoji to meet Discord's requirements.
How do I add a custom emoji to Discord?+
Go to your Discord Server Settings → Emoji → Upload Emoji. Select your PNG or GIF file (128×128px, under 256KB). You need the Manage Emojis permission to add custom emojis.
What format do Discord emojis need to be?+

Free Discord servers get 50 static and 50 animated emoji slots. Server Boost Level 1 adds 50 more (100 total), Level 2 adds 150 more (200 total), and Level 3 unlocks 250 emoji slots plus 250 animated emoji slots.
Do I need Discord Nitro to use animated emojis?+
Animated emojis can be uploaded to any boosted server by an admin. To use animated emojis in chat, regular users need Discord Nitro. All server members can use custom static PNG emojis for free without Nitro.
